Good News on World Environment Day

UK solar generation has reached record heights and the national grid has spent 18 days coal-free for the first time since the industrial revolution. All just in time to mark World Environment Day, which calls for us all to take action to #BeatAirPollution.

The situation could hardly be more urgent, ‘caring for the planet is vital for our survival’. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change predict that coal will have to be almost entirely phased out, if we are to control global carbon levels sufficiently to keep to the vital maximum 1.5C rise in temperatures.

The good news is that on May 14th, solar energy supplied 25% of the UK’s power for the first time ever.

A combination of clear skies and mild temperatures played a part in the peak generation. Alongside this, the national grid announced 18 coal-free days running up until June 3rd, the first such stretch for 130 years.

We undeniably have a long way to go – carbon dioxide levels have been shown to have risen sharply yet again this year. Business leaders and scientists this week urged the government to legislate for a target of net-zero emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050, as recommended by the government’s independent climate advisors.
