Reasons to be Optimistic
The climate crisis is the greatest threat humanity has ever faced. It is caused by the build up of greenhouse gases from burning fossil fuels and the destruction of areas that store carbon, like the world’s rainforests.
It’s easy to feel despondent, the UN has agreed that unless we limit temperature rise to 1.5C we are headed towards irrevocable change, this would render large areas of the world uninhabitable, more frequent extreme weather events and the end of many species. This is scary stuff but at this point it’s worth remembering that we already have the solutions, they just need to be implemented.
Here are a few reasons to be optimistic about our future:
The sun continuously pelts the earth with 35,000 times the amount of energy required by all of us who now use electricity on the planet.
Just one kW of power generated from solar panels prevents: 150 lbs of coal mined, 300 lbs of CO2 emissions and 105 gallons of water being consumed.
Though both China and India are major polluters recent research shows that their extensive tree planting projects plus farming expansion have increased the world’s green areas by the equivalent of the Amazon rainforests. This equates to 2 million sq miles of extra leaf area per year, compared with the early 2000s – a 5% increase. Read more >
Despite President Trump’s withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement, the governors of individual states such as California and New York have helped push the renewables sector in the US. Read more >
