Tree planting (alongside renewables) is widely recognised as one of the best ways to combat the climate crisis. Trees absorb carbon dioxide and so can help reduce overall carbon levels. Countries across the world are undertaking mammoth tree planting projects in an effort to tackle climate change and deforestation.
Ethiopia has announced it has planted over 350 million trees in one day. It is part of a national initiative to plant an incredible four billion trees between May and October this year, so far the total has reached 2.6 billion. The country is hoping to have beaten the tree planting record held by India where 66 million trees were planted in 2017.
Pakistan hit its target of planting a billion trees, way ahead of schedule in 2017. So in 2018, they decided to launch a new target – to plant 10 billion trees in the next five years.
The Great Green Wall is another Africa-led movement with a monumental ambition to grow an 8,000km natural wonder of the world across the entire width of the continent. Tackling the great issues of climate change, drought, famine, conflict and migration, once complete this will be the largest living mass on the planet.
